GOATOTE is selected as winner of Beyond the Bag Challenge
We are proud to announce GOATOTE is a winner of the Beyond the Bag innovation challenge, presented by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners and the Consortium to Reinvent the Retail Bag.
We currently use 100 billion plastic bags per year in the U.S. alone and less than 10 percent are recycled. Single-use plastic bags continue to be one of the top 10 items found on beaches, contributing to a global waste issue.
The Beyond the Bag challenge is a critical part of the Consortium’s multi-year Beyond the Bag Initiative, led by Closed Loop Partners and Founding Partners, CVS Health, Target, and Walmart, to identify and scale sustainable alternatives to the single-use plastic retail bag. The ultimate goal is to drive transformational change that positively impacts people, businesses, and the planet.
GOATOTE was selected from more than 450 submissions around the world, alongside eight other innovators. We will now move into the next phase of the project: testing the viability of our design, which GOATOTE utilizes a mobile application and in-store kiosk to provide reusable bags already at the store for you. Once returned, the bags are cleaned and sanitized and put back into the system for reuse.
Over the next year, the Consortium will work closely with winning solutions throughout 2021, supporting prototyping, mentoring, and iterative developments toward piloting select solutions in-market.

GOATOTE and St Paul Public Schools team up to help eliminate plastic bags in the classroom
GOATOTE’S educational division is working with St Paul Public Schools to eliminate plastic bags used for their breakfast in the classroom program.
In 2018 SPPS district used over 4 million single use plastic bags. Most of these bags are distributed to students for the Breakfast in the Classroom Program. This program provides breakfast to all students and provides them time in the morning to enjoy a nutritious breakfast.
The students collect their breakfast items in a single use plastic bag when they arrive and head to the classroom or their designated breakfast area.
Now GOATOTE is providing small size reusable bags for student to use. When breakfast is over students drop their GOATOTE bags in designated return bins. GOATOTE washes and disinfects the bags before returning them to the schools for reuse.
This initiative not only teaches students the fundamentals of reuse from an early age, but it set to eliminate over 24 tons of single use plastic waste per year! And that’s only 1 school district.
